چکیده

Synopsis: In terms of workability of cement based materials, ettringite formation is of major importance. Thus, the interaction between polycarboxylate-ether based superplasticizers (PCE) and various pure cement clinker and hydrate phases is investigated by means of rheological, adsorption and zeta potential measurements. Microstructural analysis of fresh pastes is carried out using cryo-microscopic methods. The rheological results reveal that the ettringite phase is dominating the workability properties of cement suspensions as the PCE shows high affinity to adsorb onto ettringite surfaces. The dispersive effect of PCE in cement suspensions is mainly governed by electrostatic and/or steric repulsive forces evoked by the PCE molecules. This effect can be observed by cryo-microscopy on high-pressure frozen cement suspensions. Without PCE, ettringite tends to agglomerate with the tricalciumsilicate rich clinker particles due to their opposite zeta potential. Therefore, the ettringite is inhomogeneously distributed in the OPC suspension. This distribution pattern changes completely in the presence of PCE, where the ettringite crystals now are mainly present in the interstitial pore space. These results underline that the ettringite phase and its dispersion in the fresh cement paste is acting as the major key mineral concerning workability issues for cement applications.

Impact of zeta potential of early cement hydration phases on superplasticizer adsorption

The zeta potential of early hydration products of cement was found to be a key factor for superplasticizer adsorption. A highly positive zeta potential results in a strong superplasticizer adsorption whereas a negative zeta potential does not allow adsorption. Synthetic ettringite precipitated from solution shows a highly positive zeta potential, hence it adsorbs great amounts of negatively cha...

Development of a ReaxFF reactive force field for ettringite and study of its mechanical failure modes from reactive dynamics simulations.

Ettringite is a hexacalcium aluminate trisulfate hydrate mineral that forms during Portland cement hydration. Its presence plays an important role in controlling the setting rate of the highly reactive aluminate phases in cement paste and has also been associated with severe cracking in cured hardened cement. To understand how it forms and how its properties influence those of hardened cement a...

Delayed Ettringite Formation in Fly Ash Concrete under Moist Curing Conditions

During the hydration of cement, tricalcium aluminate (C3A) reacts with gypsum and forms ettringite (AFt). Once all gypsum is consumed, ettringite can further react with remaining C3A and form monosulfate (AFm) at 1–2 days. Normally, at early ages, ettringite all transfers to AFm phase. After several months or years, ettringite can form again if a new source of sulfate becomes available in the p...

Design and synthesis of macrocyclic ligands for specific interaction with crystalline ettringite and demonstration of a viable mechanism for the setting of cement

Cementitious materials are among those most widely used by mankind while being among the least well understood. The detailed physicochemical processes involved in the hydration and setting of cement slurries are very complex, and a clearly defined quantitative account is still lacking; indeed, even the composition of the cement powder itself is not known exactly. Still less has there been any u...

Current understanding of cellulose ethers impact on the hydration of C3A and C3A-sulphate systems

The impact of cellulose ethers (CE) on C3A hydration was examined to support the understanding of the retarding effect of CE on cement hydration. In this sense, we successively studied the CE adsorption on ettringite and calcium hydroaluminates, and then the CE influence during C3A hydration in presence or absence of calcium sulphate. We emphasized a phase-specific adsorption of CE depending on...
